Ahangama vs Weligama: Which Should You Pick?

Fifteen minutes apart on the same coast, but two very different rhythms. Here's how to choose.

Short answer: Ahangama for reef breaks, cafés and remote work; Weligama for beginner surf, budget and a bigger social scene. Both make good bases for the whole south coast.

    The surf

Weligama = the easiest beginner beach break in Sri Lanka. Ahangama = reef breaks (Kabalana, Plantations, Insanity) that reward intermediates and better. If you're brand-new, learn in Weligama, then move up the coast to Ahangama when you're paddling out.

For digital nomads and long stays

Ahangama has a more established nomad scene — more cafés with reliable wifi, more coworking, more people staying a month+. Weligama is catching up but is still busier and more transient.

    Prices

Weligama is meaningfully cheaper for stays and food. Ahangama runs 15–30% higher because of the café/nomad density.
