Weligama vs Hiriketiya: Which Should You Pick?
Two of Sri Lanka's most popular south-coast towns, 45 minutes apart, but very different vibes. Here's the honest side-by-side.
Short answer: Weligama for surf, social scene and first-time travellers; Hiriketiya for yoga, quiet and slow mornings. Longer answer below.
The vibe
Weligama is a real working town — busier, louder, more variety. Hiriketiya is a single palm-shaded lane leading to a horseshoe bay, quieter and more intentional. Extroverts default to Weligama; introverts default to Hiri.
The surf
Weligama has a wide sandy-bottom beach break that's excellent for beginners — the easiest wave in Sri Lanka. Hiriketiya has a punchier reef/beach break better suited to intermediates and longboarders looking for a smaller, more mannered peak.
- Total beginner? Weligama, no debate.
- Improver / longboarder? Hiri is more fun.
- Advanced? Head 15 min east to Ahangama's reefs (Kabalana, Plantations).
Food and cafés
Hiri punches above its weight for cafés — more per-capita good places to eat than anywhere else on the south coast. Weligama has more variety (proper restaurants, Sri Lankan curry houses, rooftop bars) but a less curated feel.
Budget
Weligama is cheaper across the board — dorm beds, taxis, curries. Hiri costs 20–40% more for equivalent food and stays because the town is smaller and the crowd is more design-conscious.
