Hiriketiya Guide: Sri Lanka's Horseshoe Surf Bay

A tiny horseshoe-shaped bay on the deep south coast where palms lean over the sand, a mellow point break peels off the headland and life moves at the pace of a yoga breath — welcome to 'Hiri'.

    Best time

November to April for the cleanest surf and sunshine; the bay still works in the shoulder months.

    Budget

$30–80 USD a day — Hiri trends a little pricier than Weligama thanks to its boutique scene.

    Getting there

About 45 min east of Mirissa, 20 min from Tangalle. Closest train station is Matara; from there take a tuk-tuk (30–40 min).

Hiriketiya — universally shortened to 'Hiri' — is barely 200 metres wide, but it has become one of Sri Lanka's most loved surf bays. A reef-protected sandy point pushes out clean, long rights and the occasional left, while the bay itself stays gentle enough for total beginners.

Around the sand, a tight cluster of cafés, yoga shalas and small hotels make this the south coast's most concentrated wellness spot. You can roll out of bed, surf, eat brunch, do yoga and be in the ocean again before sunset without taking a tuk-tuk.

    where to go

Best things to do in Hiriketiya

Hiri is small enough to walk in 10 minutes, but you can easily fill four or five days without leaving the bay.

    Surf the point

    • A long, mellow right-hander peeling off the eastern headland — perfect for longboards and improving surfers.
    • On bigger days a left breaks across the bay; the inside is forgiving enough for beginners.
    • It gets crowded by mid-morning — paddle out at first light if you want space.

    Sunrise & sunset yoga

    • Multiple shalas around the bay run daily drop-in classes — vinyasa, yin, breathwork and the occasional sound bath.
    • A sunrise class followed by surf is the classic Hiri morning.

    Brunch around the bay

    • Hiri punches well above its weight on food — açai bowls, slow-cooked breakfasts, wood-fired pizza and great coffee.
    • Most cafés are open all day and welcome digital nomads.

Day trip to Tangalle & Goyambokka

    • Long empty beaches a 20–30 minute tuk-tuk away — Goyambokka and Silent Beach are particularly beautiful.
    • Pair with a seafood lunch in Tangalle.

Hidden jungle pool & Mulkirigala rock temple

    • Inland from Hiri, a freshwater natural pool makes a great half-day escape from the salt.
    • The Mulkirigala rock temple complex is a quieter, less-crowded alternative to Sigiriya.

    Insider tips

    Surf early

By 9–10am the line-up is busy; pre-dawn sessions are when Hiri is at its best.

    Cash matters

Most small cafés and yoga shalas take cards now, but carry some LKR for tuk-tuks and the smaller juice bars.

Add it to a south-coast loop

Hiri pairs perfectly with a few days each in Weligama or Ahangama for a balanced south-coast week.
