Surf Main Point
- A long right-hand point break that wraps around the headland in the middle of town — best from waist-high upwards.
- Gets busy by 8am — paddle out early or surf the evening glass-off.
- Reef-bottom in places; booties and a hat help.
A long sweep of golden sand on Sri Lanka's east coast where a world-class point break peels for hundreds of metres, elephants wander the lagoons inland and the season runs exactly opposite to the south coast — Arugam Bay is the country's surf capital.

May to September — peak east-coast season with the cleanest waves and driest weather.
$25–60 USD a day for a hostel, local rice & curry and surf.
7–9 hrs from Colombo by road; many travellers take the night bus or fly Colombo–Batticaloa and drive (about 3 hrs).
From May to September, while the south coast is washed out by the monsoon, Arugam Bay (or 'A-Bay') comes alive. The main point — Main Point, right in front of town — is a long, peeling right-hander that's earned it a place on the world surf league circuit.
Around the surf, A-Bay is a single-street beach town backed by lagoons and national parks. You can be elephant-spotting on a Kumana or Lahugala safari one morning and back in the water by sunset.
A-Bay is more than just surf — between sessions, the inland safari country and a chain of secret point breaks are what keep people coming back.
Peak surf season — consistent swell, offshore winds and dry weather.
Shoulder months — can be excellent before the crowds and after the season ends.
Off-season — the town is sleepy and many businesses close; head to the south coast instead.
A-Bay is a long way from Colombo — pack one board bag and trust the tuk-tuks to get you between points.
Peak season fills up fast; reserve your stay and any in-season events a few weeks ahead.
Build at least one day for Kumana or a Pottuvil lagoon canoe — it's what makes A-Bay different from the south coast.
Wake N Flow is opening on the east coast in Arugam Bay — a beachside base with surf storage, lagoon and safari support, and the same community feel that runs through our south-coast hostels. Follow our Instagram for the launch.
