Sri Lanka Surf Seasons: When to Surf Each Coast

Sri Lanka's two surf coasts run on opposite calendars — once you understand the monsoons, you can chase clean waves here all year round.

    Best time

South coast: Nov–Apr. East coast: May–Sep. Shoulder months work on both with some luck.

    Budget

$25–80 USD a day depending on hostel vs guesthouse vs boutique stay.

    Getting there

Fly into Colombo (CMB), then drive south (2–3 hrs) or east (7–9 hrs / domestic flight to Batticaloa).

Sri Lanka sits in the path of two monsoons that hit the island at different times — and that's the single most important thing to understand when planning a surf trip here.

When the south-west monsoon batters the south coast (May–September), the east coast is calm, clean and offshore. When the north-east monsoon arrives on the east coast (November–February), it's the south coast's turn to shine. In short: you can surf in Sri Lanka almost every month of the year — you just need to be on the right coast.

    where to go

    When to surf each coast

Here's the breakdown, coast by coast, so you can match your trip to the right swell window.

South coast — November to April

    • Main season for Weligama, Ahangama, Hiriketiya, Mirissa, Midigama and Galle.
    • Trade winds are offshore in the mornings; expect waist- to head-high waves most days.
    • Crowds peak Dec–Feb — surf early for empty line-ups and travel in late Nov or Mar/Apr for a quieter version of the same season.

East coast — May to September

    • Main season for Arugam Bay and the surrounding outer points (Whiskey, Peanut Farm, Elephant Rock, Pottuvil).
    • Consistent waist- to overhead swell, clean offshores and reliably dry weather.
    • July and August are peak month; June and September are slightly less crowded but still excellent.

Shoulder months — April and October

    • April: south coast season is winding down but still surfable; the east is starting to wake up.
    • October: south coast is starting to clean up; east coast is winding down but can still produce.
    • Locals often score the best uncrowded sessions in these in-between weeks.

    Off-season — surf-able with the right expectations

    • South in summer (Jun–Aug): often blown out, but small bays like Hiri can still produce in light wind windows.
    • East in winter (Dec–Feb): mostly flat; better to focus on the south coast and inland travel.

    Insider tips

    Pack one board

A 7'0–7'6 mini-mal or a fish handles most of Sri Lanka. Board rental is available everywhere; you don't need to fly with one.

    Mornings are gold

Wind picks up by mid-morning on both coasts — dawn sessions are when it's at its best.

    Reef respect

Many east-coast and outer-reef south-coast breaks are shallow at low tide — wear booties and ask locally before paddling out.
